Writing the book

In writing The Climate Optimist Handbook, I set out to reframe how we talk and think about the climate crisis. Instead of being paralyzed by fear, guilt, or despair, I wanted to create a guide that empowers us to see possibility, agency, and hope.

This book is my invitation to shift the narrative — from responsibility to opportunity, from minimizing harm to maximizing impact, from clinging to the old to co-creating something new.

It’s not about denying the urgency of the crisis, but about choosing a mindset that fuels action, resilience, and joy. My hope is that these pages remind you that optimism isn’t naïve: it’s a strategy, and one we desperately need right now.

How we show up for these times matters more than we can imagine. Optimism is not a willy-nilly mindset — it’s a practice, a strategy, and one we need to nurture now more than ever.

“Timely and inspiring book.”

“In the face of the warming of the globe and all the harm this is causing to our planet, many people are losing hope, becoming apathetic, and doing nothing. This is deeply concerning because every individual has a role to play in solving the problems we’ve created. There are many ways you can help and Anne Therese Gennari discusses these in this timely and inspiring book.”

— Jane Goodall

“A wonderful definition of leadership is the capacity to listen to all the voices. Anne Therese Gennari is a leader who has listened, read, and studied the science of global warming since she was a young girl. Her handbook lays out where we are, how we got there, and how to go forward. Fully grasping the implications of the climate emergency is not for the faint of heart. Understanding how to address the impending crisis will fill your heart. Here’s how.”

— Paul Hawken

“An easy-to-read, hopeful, and inspiring book. Anne does an amazing job at helping us embrace not only the challenge of change but the adventure of change.”

— Jack Adam Weber

“I have just finished reading The Climate Optimist Handbook, one of the most important and encouraging books I’ve read about the climate.”

—Jane Ekstrand

“As a storyteller, I’m slightly obsessed with narratives. But not all narratives. The climate narrative is one of those that urgently needs to change – from ”the end of the world”, to ”a new beginning”. Because you know what: We can still fix this. You don’t believe me? Read this book. Then you will.”
